Table Base Height

One question we get from many customers is how tall of a table base do you need? Weddingfurniture.com offers options for Dining Height, Bar Height, Counter Height and Coffee Table Height, and many of our bases can be cut to a custom height if you need something precise for your project. But how do you match your chairs or stools to the perfect height table? There’s a simple rule of thumb you can follow to get the best match, keep reading to find out.
Generally speaking for most tables including dining tables, eat-in kitchen countertops and bar tables, you’ll want to match the height of your table base to the height of your seating (whether that be dining chairs or taller stools). Your table base should be 10 to 12 inches taller than the seat of your chairs. That amount of space gives your guests plenty of room to slide in and out, and have a comfortable level of clearance for their legs and knees.
Most standard dining chairs are around 18” tall at the seat, which is why most of our dining height table bases are around 28 to 29 inches tall. Bar stools are usually around 30 inches tall, so they match up very well with our bar height table bases that are between 40 and 42 inches. Counter height stools can have more variation, but are generally around 24 to 26 inches tall to match up with our standard 34 ¾” counter height table bases. A quick piece of advice: when measuring chairs with padded seats, make sure to account for any change in height when someone sits down and compresses the padded material.
The 10 to 12 inch rule of thumb works really well for restaurants, hotels and other commercial environments, as well as for homeowners looking to create custom dining tables and bar tables. However, it’s just a general guideline, and you can adjust your seats or your base higher or lower depending on your particular needs. Or if everyone in your family is shorter in height, you might want a little less than 10 inches of clearance to make sure the table surface isn’t too high to be comfortable (and of course the opposite may be true for very tall families).

With coffee tables, which are usually around 18 to 20 inches, there isn’t a hard rule of thumb since the chairs are usually taller than the table. In those cases, you’ll want to do some testing to see which height table and chairs will work best in your space.
